How to Shop for Diamonds

Shopping for the perfect diamond for your fiancés engagement ring, an anniversary ring, necklace, earrings or bracelet can be overwhelming if you don’t know what you are looking for. There are some basics that should be thought about before you go on that shopping spree. If you don’t educate yourself first on how to find good diamonds, you may spend thousands of dollars for a knockoff or lower quality stone.

Diamonds have their own language
There is a whole glossary of terms that apply to diamonds. When searching for the right one, the best that you can get for your money, you need to know what some of these terms mean. Of most importance are the five “C’s”; cut clarity, color, carat weight and certificate.

The cut of a diamond has nothing to do with the shape at all. A good cut will allow light to enter and reflect back through the top, whereas a poorly cut diamond allows the light to enter and proceed out the bottom or sides. The reflectiveness of the diamond cut is what gives it its brilliance.

Clarity refers to the inclusions a diamond has. All diamonds have imperfect attributes. Some of these can obscure the better parts, but in a good diamond they are just the identifying marks. You want to look for a diamond that has few to no inclusions. Be aware that some of the flaws in diamonds are not natural. They are caused by imperfect cutting. The fewer inclusions there are on a diamond, the higher value that is placed on it.

Clarity enhanced diamonds, are perfect for those earrings, bracelet, or necklace you are giving as a present for that anniversary, graduation or birthday. Because they are brilliant, and no one will know they are clarity enhanced since they will not be examined as closely as a wedding set or engagement ring. However, a high quality clarity enhanced diamond can be also perfect for an engagement ring. You can purchase a larger clarity enhanced diamond for 50% less than a natural diamond, and it will be just as brilliant and beautiful.

Carat is the weight of a diamond. It is unusual to find huge diamonds, which is why the more carats a diamond weighs, the more expensive it is. Carat comes from the use of carob seeds used in past times to balance scales. This measure for weights and balances is one of the most accurate available. The color of diamonds can vary. White diamonds are considered the most popular, but the scale goes all the way down to yellow. Rarely there are diamonds found in other colors including purple, red, blue green and brown.

The certificate of a diamond is also important since there is a chance of getting a blood diamond from unknown locations. Most jewelers have banded to together to eliminate the influx of blood diamonds into their inventory. A blood diamond is one that has been illegally or ill gotten, through the injury or misuse of others. Remember that clarity enhanced diamonds are also certified, registered and guaranteed.
